Founded in Augusta in 1882 by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, Paine College grew from an audacious act of interracial cooperation — its board of trustees is often called the oldest interracial body in the nation. Paine College was founded on November 1, 1882, in Augusta by leaders of the Colored (now Christian) Methodist Episcopal Church together with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and was named for Bishop Robert Paine. First envisioned by Bishop Lucius H. Holsey, the school began with a high-school component and by 1903 offered enough college-level work to be rechartered as Paine College. A private historically Black college whose board of trustees is often cited as one of the nation's oldest interracial governing bodies, Paine moved to its present site in 1886.
