Saint Paul's churchyard is the oldest cemetery in Augusta, with graves reaching back to the 1730s on ground that began as colonial Fort Augusta. During the Revolutionary War the British fortified the site as Fort Cornwallis, which fell to American forces under Andrew Pickens and 'Light Horse Harry' Lee in June 1781. Among those buried here is William Few, a signer of the United States Constitution, and a granite Celtic cross raised by the Colonial Dames now marks the site of the old fort.
