The Story
This small family burial ground near Augusta is best known as the resting place of William Schley (1786-1858), a Maryland-born attorney and judge who served as the 36th Governor of Georgia from 1835 to 1837. Before entering the governorship, Schley sat on the Superior Court bench for the state's Middle Division, and he later served four terms as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Georgia Free and Accepted Masons. The cemetery contains roughly two dozen memorials, primarily members of the Schley family.
