The surrounding town carries Civil War history that predates the present building: in November 1864 elements of Sherman's army passed just north of Conyers on the march from Lithonia toward Covington, and in the war's final weeks Union troops pursuing the fleeing Confederate president Jefferson Davis captured the cavalry general Joseph "Fightin' Joe" Wheeler near the town. The county took its name from the granite strata underlying its rocky hills and dales. The adjacent 1897 Rockdale County Jail survives as a separate historic landmark near the courthouse square. Together the courthouse and jail remain the civic anchors of downtown Conyers.
