GeorgiaOn January 25, 1889, an estimated 5,000 people streamed into Ellaville, then a town of only a few hundred, to witness the public, legal hanging of Charles Blackman, a Black man convicted of murder after a drawn-out case in which the Georgia Supreme Court twice reversed his conviction and ordered new trials before a third jury sentenced him to death. Those trials were held in Schley County's earlier 1858 courthouse; the present building came a decade later, erected in 1899 in the Romanesque Revival style by the firm Golucke & Stewart, of brick with stone and metal trim on a cross-shaped plan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980, and is the county's second courthouse. Its capped clock tower, long nicknamed the "Leaning Tower of Ellaville," was straightened and reinforced in 1991. The building remains the focal point of the Ellaville square.
