Jackson Baptist Church Cemetery

Jackson Missionary Baptist Church was organized in the late 1860s by eight founding members, and on December 10, 1870 William H. Beard Sr. gave more than two acres from his home place along the old Savannah-to-Augusta stage road for a church and cemetery. Before the first sanctuary was built, the congregation worshipped in a nearby dwelling called the Brown House, which local tradition holds sheltered George Washington during a visit to the area. The present church dates to 1890, and the adjoining cemetery holds more than 500 graves from the community it has served for over 150 years.
