The Story
Known historically as West Hill Cemetery, this burial ground on the northwest edge of Newington is today more often called the Newington City Cemetery. Its earliest marked graves date to 1917 and 1918, placing its beginnings alongside the young railroad town, which had been established as a depot only a decade earlier. The West Hill name persisted into the mid-1950s before local records shifted to the municipal designation. It should not be confused with the older North Newington Baptist Church grounds a couple of miles away.
