Stonewall Confederate Cemetery

Stonewall Confederate Cemetery was established around 1867 by Griffin's Ladies Memorial Association on ground that General Lewis Lawrence Griffin had set aside for burials when he founded the town in 1840. More than 500 Confederate soldiers are buried here, along with a single Union soldier; many were casualties of the 1864 fighting around Atlanta and Jonesboro who died in the hospital at the old Synodical College. The association raised its principal monument to the Confederate dead in 1869, among the earliest such memorials in Georgia, and Griffin held one of the state's first Confederate Memorial Day observances in the years just after the war.
