Its front and rear facades each carry identical projecting pedimented porticoes with four Tuscan columns, though the original cupola and clock tower have long since been lost. The courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980, and stands at the center of the Lumpkin Commercial Historic District, a Register-listed cluster of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century storefronts ringing the square. Lumpkin has served as the seat of Stewart County since the county's creation in 1830 in Georgia's southwestern plantation belt. The courthouse remains the architectural and civic centerpiece of the town.
