The Story
The East Forsyth Street Cemetery, also called the Old City Cemetery or Founders Memorial Park, is the oldest public burial ground in Sumter County and the resting place of several of Americus's founders, including the town's first mayor and the county's first sheriff. It fell out of use around the Civil War years after the city opened the larger Oak Grove Cemetery on the eastern edge of town, and the old graveyard gradually deteriorated. Local garden clubs restored and dedicated it as a historical monument in 1968.
