The cemetery dates to 1843, when Matthew Franklin Miller purchased land from his brother-in-law Isaac Cheney and set aside a portion as a family burial plot. First known as the Oak Vale Cemetery, it later took the name Miller-Holmes, or simply Holmes, Cemetery. Miller's own grave remains the oldest marked burial on the grounds, which lie along Chalybeate Springs Road near Evans Chapel.
