The Story
Locust Grove Cemetery near Sharon marks what is remembered as the cradle of Catholicism in Georgia. In the years after the Revolution, Catholic families migrating from Maryland settled this corner of the Georgia backcountry and established the Church of the Purification here, making Locust Grove the home of the state's earliest organized Catholic congregation. Because of that heritage the burial ground is also known as the First Catholic Church Cemetery and as Purification Cemetery. Its old markers preserve the memory of the pioneer Catholic community that once flourished around Sharon.
