The Story
This burial ground surrounds Block House Baptist Church, roughly two miles south of Jacksonville, on the site of a fortified blockhouse that General David Blackshear erected during the War of 1812. The structure gave settlers shelter during frontier conflict with Native peoples and also served as an early place of worship, standing where the old Hartford and Blackshear trails met the River Road. The Daughters of the American Revolution marked the spot in 1921, and the church itself was organized in 1877 by the Rev. W. M. Williamson with charter families including the Bowens, Fussells, Garrisons and Rawlins.
