The Story
Established in 1909, this Jewish burial ground, formally the B'nai Israel Hebrew Cemetery, served the congregation whose 1913 Romanesque Revival synagogue is among the few intact pre-World War II Orthodox synagogues surviving in Georgia. The community was built largely by Eastern European Jews who settled in Thomasville in the decades around 1900, and its membership peaked at some 35 families in 1925. The synagogue and cemetery were together listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
