The Story
The Lapham-Patterson House in Thomasville was built in 1884-85 as a winter cottage for Chicago shoe merchant Charles W. Lapham at a cost of about $4,500. A striking example of Queen Anne Victorian design, it is deliberately asymmetrical, containing no perfectly square or rectangular rooms and featuring more than fifty exits, oriental-style porch details, and advanced conveniences such as indoor plumbing and gas lighting. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975 and is preserved today as a Georgia state historic site.
