The Story
Old Campground Cemetery traces its origins to about 1820, when the site served as a meeting ground for circuit-riding Methodist ministers, with the first burials added in 1853. It holds some of the oldest marked graves in Toombs County. Among those interred are three Confederate veterans, including Lt. Gordon K. Fort of the 24th Battalion Georgia Cavalry, who was one of the so-called 'Immortal 600' captured officers held under fire during the Civil War, alongside Lt. Robert Stripling and Pvt. Benjamin Stripling of the Georgia Infantry.
