It is the third courthouse to serve this small mountain county, following a frame building erected on the Hiawassee square about 1857, when the county was formed, and a second courthouse completed in 1905. Just off the square stands the Old Towns County Jail, built in 1935–36 by the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, which held prisoners until a jail shared with neighboring Union County opened in the 1970s. The courthouse remains the seat of government for one of Georgia's northernmost counties, tucked in the Blue Ridge near the North Carolina line on the shore of Lake Chatuge.
