Young Harris College was established in 1886 as the McTyeire Institute, begun by Methodist circuit minister Artemus Lester to bring schooling to the isolated Blue Ridge Mountains. When the struggling school faced closure, Athens judge Young L. G. Harris donated funds to sustain it, and both the college and, in 1895, the surrounding town were renamed in his honor. The Methodist-affiliated college, whose 1892 Susan B. Harris Chapel is its oldest building, counts U.S. senator Zell Miller, actor Oliver Hardy, and singer Trisha Yearwood among its alumni.
