The Story
This roadside plot west of Lothair holds the tomb of George Michael Troup (1780-1856), who served two terms as governor of Georgia after earlier stints as a congressman and U.S. senator. Troup died in 1856 while staying at Rosemont, one of the several plantations he owned, and was buried here beside his brother. A Georgia Historical Commission marker placed in 1954 recounts that in 1833, the year he left public life, a states-rights convention nominated him for the presidency. The small enclosure, also recorded as Rosemont Plantation Cemetery, remains a designated historic site.
