The Story
The cemetery lies just northeast of Long Cane Baptist Church, a congregation organized in 1829. After the 1962 Flood Control Act authorized West Point Dam and the reservoir that became West Point Lake, the Army Corps of Engineers moved graves threatened by the rising water to higher ground here, including reinterments from the Potts, Sheppard and Wilkinson cemeteries. Engraved markers were carried along with the remains, though several people whose graves bore only blank fieldstones were reburied without any identifying marker.
