South View Cemetery

South View (Southview) Cemetery is a burial ground serving LaGrange's African American community in Troup County. It has become a place of remembrance for the victims of racial-terror lynching in Georgia, tied to the memory of Austin Callaway, a young Black man taken from the LaGrange jail and shot to death by a mob in September 1940. The observances grew out of the Community Remembrance Project led by the Equal Justice Initiative and local residents, who in 2017 dedicated a historical marker to the county's lynching victims and received a formal apology from LaGrange officials for the police department's role in the killing.
