Incorporated in 1816 as Twiggs County's first seat, Marion was named for Revolutionary 'Swamp Fox' Francis Marion and once rivaled Macon in size. Having spurned the railroad, it faded; by 1868 its courthouse was hauled to Jeffersonville.
