Rock Cemetery

Rock Cemetery, also recorded as the Rock Methodist Church Cemetery, sits in the small Upson County settlement of The Rock, midway between Thomaston and Barnesville. The village earned its name in the 1850s after a rail spur linking Thomaston to the Central of Georgia line opened and mail was left on a large roadside boulder, leading residents to address letters simply to 'the rock.' Upson County itself was organized in 1824 and named for lawyer Stephen Upson, opening to settlers after Creek lands were ceded in the treaty era tied to Chief William McIntosh. The churchyard holds roughly 240 marked graves.
