The Story
The Battle of Davis's Cross Roads, also called Dug Gap, was fought September 10-11, 1863, in McLemore's Cove in Walker County during the opening moves of the Chickamauga Campaign. Confederate commander Braxton Bragg tried to trap and destroy an isolated portion of William Rosecrans's Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. James Negley as it pushed through the mountain gaps, but poor coordination among his generals let the outnumbered Federals withdraw toward Stevens Gap. The missed opportunity, with negligible casualties, set the stage for the far larger Battle of Chickamauga nine days later.
