Monroe's municipal burial ground, long known as Rest Haven and now formally Alma Knight Allen Memorial Park, is one of the city's older cemeteries, with graves reaching back to the 1840s. It is the resting place of several notable Georgians, including Henry D. McDaniel, who served as governor of the state in the 1880s, and Moina Belle Michael, the educator remembered as the 'Poppy Lady' for making the red poppy an enduring emblem of remembrance for fallen soldiers. Gen. Robert M. Echols, a United States Army officer of the early 19th century, is also interred here, and a World War II memorial stands along the grounds' northern edge.
