Set just west of downtown Sandersville, this historic burial ground traces its beginnings to roughly 1831, the year of its earliest recorded grave, that of Reuben B. Barney. Interments remained sparse until the closing decades of the 19th century, after which the grounds filled more steadily, and burials continue today. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and still maintained by the city, the cemetery holds more than a thousand marked graves along with an unknown number of unmarked ones. Among those buried here are Georgia Governor Thomas William Hardwick and the Reverend James Danelly Anthony.
