Hardman Farm State Historic Site

Hardman Farm State Historic Site near Sautee Nacoochee preserves an 1870 Italianate mansion built by Captain James Nichols and originally called 'West End,' along with a gazebo-topped Native American burial mound known as the Nacoochee Mound. Nichols added the gazebo atop the ancient mound in 1890, and a 1915 excavation of the mound uncovered dozens of burials predating Cherokee occupation of the valley. Physician and future Georgia governor Lamartine G. Hardman bought the property in 1903, and the Hardman family donated the 173-acre farm to the state of Georgia in 1999.
