The Shoal Creek Baptist congregation's first church and graveyard once stood near the mouth of Shoal Creek where it met the Chattahoochee River, land that was submerged when Lake Lanier was impounded. When the lake drops low enough, the old church footings and part of the earlier cemetery can still be seen on one of its islands. The present cemetery, on Highway 115 west of Cleveland, holds close to 670 recorded burials.
