The Story
The Second Battle of Dalton was fought August 14-15, 1864, in Whitfield County, when Confederate cavalry under Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler raided north Georgia to cut the Western & Atlantic Railroad that supplied Sherman's armies. Wheeler demanded the surrender of the Union garrison at Dalton under Col. Bernard Laiboldt, who refused and held his fortifications; the next day Union reinforcements from Chattanooga under Maj. Gen. James B. Steedman arrived and, after several hours of skirmishing, Wheeler withdrew. The rail damage was quickly repaired, and later growth of the city of Dalton has since erased the battlefield landscape.
