In May 1864 the Tunnel Hill-to-Varnell road crossed Rocky Face's northern foothills here. Union Gen. Schofield used the nearby Harris house as headquarters May 8-10, launching divisions of the 23rd Corps against Stevenson's sector of Dalton's defenses.
