The Story
The Robert Toombs House in Washington was the home of Robert Toombs (1810-1885), the Georgia senator who became the Confederacy's first Secretary of State and later a Confederate general. Built around 1797 and acquired by Toombs in 1837, the two-story frame house, fronted by a colonnade of fluted Doric columns he added, is preserved as a state historic house museum interpreting his life. An 'unreconstructed rebel' who never took the oath of allegiance to the United States after the war, Toombs returned to a successful law practice; the house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973.
