The Tour

A frontier arsenal, the historic Medical College, and the Jaguars. A self-guided Georgia Roam campus tour.

Augusta University Campus Tour is a self-guided driving tour of Augusta, built around its campus side. It's one of 8 Georgia Roam tours in Augusta — each a different route through the city, on your own schedule.

The walk covers 5 stops over about 7.6 miles and roughly 1 hour 20 min, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.

What you'll see

This driving tour follows Augusta University across the city, from the hilltop in Summerville where it grew up to the downtown medical district where its story began. The first half explores the old Augusta Arsenal, the Army post that moved up the hill in 1827 to escape river fevers. Its brick headquarters, walls and officers' houses now sit among classrooms and oak-shaded lawns. One of those houses was the boyhood home of poet Stephen Vincent Benét, whose father commanded the arsenal in the 1910s.

From there the route takes in the university's newer side: the main campus library, and Christenberry Fieldhouse, home court of the Jaguars basketball teams that reached the NCAA Division II title game in 2008 and 2022. It ends in the medical district, where the Medical College of Georgia, chartered in 1828, anchors a campus of hospitals, labs and teaching buildings. The app explains how a small physicians' academy grew into the state's public medical school.

The stops are spread over about 7½ miles, so plan on driving between them. Allow a bit more than an hour, longer if you get out to walk the arsenal grounds. Weekday traffic around the hospitals can be heavy, so late afternoons and weekends are easier. The Georgia Roam app plays each stop's story as you pull up.
