The Tour
Chartered in 1831, LaGrange College is the oldest private college in Georgia, founded as a women's academy just three years after the city itself was laid out. Its columned brick halls crown 'The Hill,' a wooded rise with long views over downtown LaGrange. This walk runs from the antebellum core down through the arts and sciences.
LaGrange College Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of LaGrange, built around its campus side.
The walk covers 5 stops over about 1.1 miles and roughly 55 minutes, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
LaGrange College crowns the Hill, the highest point in town. This walk starts in its oldest corner, where columned red-brick halls surround a shady quadrangle. Smith Hall, long known as College Home, dates to the mid-1800s and is built of handmade brick. From the edge of the quad the land drops away, with views toward downtown LaGrange and the courthouse square.
From there the walk moves through the college's everyday and creative life. Turner Hall holds the student center. The Lamar Dodd Art Center is a public art museum and studio building named for the Georgia painter who took art classes here as a boy. Farther down the slope is the science area, named for the Callaway family, whose textile fortune built much of modern LaGrange and a good part of this campus.
The walk is about 1.1 miles and takes about an hour, with a noticeable slope between the upper and lower campus. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons. Weekdays during the semester are liveliest, and the art center's galleries are worth a stop when they are open. The Georgia Roam app shares each building's history as you arrive.
