Georgia College & State University

Georgia College & State University was chartered on November 8, 1889, as Georgia Normal and Industrial College, established to give women a practical higher education after lobbying by advocates such as Rebecca Latimer Felton and Julia Flisch. Located in the former state capital of Milledgeville, the college used the Old Governor's Mansion as an early dormitory and completed its first classroom building, Old Main, in 1891. It was later known as Georgia State College for Women (1922) and the Woman's College of Georgia (1961) before becoming coeducational in 1967, and it adopted its present name as Georgia's public liberal arts university in 1996.
