What you'll see
This tour explores the historic heart of Milledgeville, which served as Georgia's capital before the Civil War. Georgia College's Front Campus is a shaded lawn entered through iron arches, lined with red-brick buildings with tall white columns. The oldest, Atkinson Hall, dates to 1896. Nearby is the library that holds Flannery O'Connor's papers. O'Connor studied here in the 1940s.
A few blocks away is the Old Governor's Mansion, a pink-stuccoed Greek Revival house finished in 1839. Eight governors lived here before the capital moved to Atlanta. Union troops occupied it during Sherman's March, and after 1889 the new women's college used it as a dormitory and president's home. North of town is Andalusia, the farm where O'Connor lived with her mother and her famous peafowl and wrote most of her fiction. The farmhouse and its outbuildings still stand.
This is a driving tour of about 8.5 miles and roughly an hour and a half, because Andalusia is out on the highway north of downtown. Go Tuesday through Saturday during the day if you want to tour the mansion and the farmhouse, since both are closed on Mondays. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons. The Georgia Roam app tells each stop's story as you arrive.
