The Story
Linwood Cemetery was established in 1894 as a private African American burial ground in Macon's historic Pleasant Hill neighborhood, and it remains listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its roughly 13 acres contain as many as 4,000 graves, including those of Black doctors, lawyers, bankers, educators, and business leaders who shaped the community during segregation. The cemetery is also a resting place for Buffalo Soldiers and veterans of conflicts from the Spanish-American War through Vietnam, and it has been the focus of extensive community-led restoration after years of neglect.
