Riverside Cemetery

Riverside Cemetery was established in 1887 by a private corporation as a genteel alternative to the nearby city-run Rose Hill Cemetery, which critics felt Macon was maintaining poorly. Its original 23 acres were laid out between 1887 and 1889 by the celebrated landscape architect Calvert Vaux, making it one of the firm's few Southeastern commissions and a rare surviving example of his picturesque, naturalistic design in Georgia. Now spanning roughly 125 acres along the Ocmulgee River and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the cemetery holds more than 18,000 burials, including Civil War veterans and aviator Hazel Raines, one of Georgia's pioneering women pilots.
