History
Mercer University was founded on January 14, 1833 as Mercer Institute in Penfield, Georgia, established by Georgia Baptists and named for the minister and philanthropist Jesse Mercer. Its early benefactors included Josiah Penfield, whose bequest launched the effort, and Billington M. Sanders, who served as its first principal. In 1871 the trustees relocated the institution to Macon, where its historic campus remains today.
