The Tour
Historic Macon quad, Gothic landmarks, and Bear country. A self-guided Georgia Roam campus tour.
Mercer University Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Macon, built around its campus side. It's one of 9 Georgia Roam tours in Macon — each a different route through the city, on your own schedule.
The walk covers 6 stops over about 18.1 miles and roughly 1 hour 48 min, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
Mercer's Macon campus is a walk through nearly 150 years of Georgia's oldest private university. The centerpiece is the Victorian Gothic administration building from the 1870s. Its tall tower has been rebuilt once after a fire, and generations of students have climbed it and signed their names inside. Around it, the historic quad's brick buildings and old oaks set the tone.
From there the tour moves into the modern university. You'll pass the main library, whose own tower rises over the central quad, and a science complex named for longtime president Kirby Godsey. The walk ends at Five Star Stadium, where football returned in 2013 after a 70-year break. The Bears have since won back-to-back Southern Conference titles. Along the way the app tells stories of the university's move from Penfield to Macon, its desegregation in 1963 and campus traditions like rubbing Jesse Mercer's statue for luck.
This is a walking tour of the main campus, so wear comfortable shoes. Weekday mornings and late afternoons are pleasant, and fall Saturdays bring home-game crowds near the stadium. Parking is easiest in visitor lots near the main entrance off Mercer University Drive. The Georgia Roam app plays each stop's story as you arrive.
