Middle Georgia State University's Macon campus is the flagship of a university created in 2015 by merging Macon State College with Middle Georgia College of Cochran. The campus itself is older: it opened in 1968 as Macon Junior College on a wooded 167-acre tract in west Macon, laid out from the start around a landscaped arboretum and a lake. This easy walk connects the campus's science and academic buildings with its lakeside greenspace, tracing how a 1968 junior college grew into a regional university.
Middle Georgia State University Campus Tour is a self-guided walking tour of Macon, built around its campus side. It's one of 9 Georgia Roam tours in Macon — each a different route through the city, on your own schedule.
The walk covers 6 stops over about 0.9 miles and roughly 50 minutes, entirely at your own pace. Each stop's story unlocks on your phone the moment you arrive — GPS-triggered, hands-free, no guide and no tour group to keep up with.
What you'll see
Middle Georgia State's Macon campus was planned as a landscape first. When Macon Junior College opened here in 1968, the grounds had been planted with thousands of trees and shrubs around a small lake. Decades later, a trustee's effort added themed gardens that were named in his honor in 2003. Today the formal gardens have grown into the wooded, walkable setting that makes this campus feel like a park.
The walk links that green core with the buildings that trace the school's growth. You'll see the original academic cluster where the junior college began and a 2004 science and nursing building named for a local benefactor. There's also a newer conference center with a boardroom overlooking the lake, and the library, which hides a small museum of vintage computers. The Student Life Center shows how a commuter college became a residential university after the 2013 merger that created Middle Georgia State.
The loop is just under a mile on campus sidewalks and paths and takes under an hour. Spring, when the azaleas and dogwoods bloom, and mild fall afternoons are the prettiest times to go. Visitor parking is near the main entrance on University Parkway. The Georgia Roam app shares each stop's story as you arrive.
