Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, on the east bank of the Ocmulgee River at Macon, preserves earthworks built by the South Appalachian Mississippian culture and evidence of thousands of years of continuous human habitation. Its centerpiece is the roughly 55-foot Great Temple Mound, and the park contains a reconstructed ceremonial earth lodge whose original clay floor has been radiocarbon-dated to about 1015 CE. First protected as a national monument authorized in 1934 and established in 1936, it was redesignated a national historical park in 2019; the Muscogee (Creek) Nation traces its ancestry to the peoples who built the mounds.
