History
Georgia Southern University originated in December 1906, when Statesboro won the competition to host the First District Agricultural and Mechanical School. The school opened in 1908 with four faculty members and fifteen students, teaching farming and homemaking skills to rural youth who nicknamed it "the Culture." From those origins it grew into Georgia Southern University, today one of the state's largest public universities, with campuses in Statesboro, Savannah, and Hinesville.
