The Story
The City of Savannah acquired this former plantation land in 1850, and the cemetery was dedicated in 1852 and opened for burials in 1853, taking its name from the laurel oaks that grew on the site. Laurel Grove North became the city's principal burial ground for white residents and holds more than 1,500 Confederate dead, including several generals, along with the "Silence" memorial commemorating those lost at Gettysburg. Among its notable graves are Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low, composer James Pierpont, who wrote "Jingle Bells," and Florence Martus, Savannah's famed "Waving Girl."
