The Story
In 1853 Savannah set aside a section of its newly opened Laurel Grove Cemetery as a burial ground for the city's African American residents, both enslaved and free, replacing an older Black cemetery near Whitefield Square. It became the most significant nineteenth-century African American cemetery in Savannah, holding the graves of pioneering Baptist ministers including the Reverend Andrew Bryan and the Reverend Andrew Cox Marshall, whose remains were relocated here. Generations of Black educators, clergy, tradespeople, and civic leaders are interred at the site.
