The Story
Pin Point is a small Gullah-Geechee community about eleven miles south of Savannah, founded by formerly enslaved people and their descendants who settled the marshland in the 1890s after arriving from nearby Ossabaw, Green, and Skidaway Islands. The tight-knit settlement, whose residents long worked the oyster and crab factory that anchored the village until 1985, is the birthplace of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Its burial ground reflects the deep West African-rooted Gullah-Geechee heritage preserved by the community, now interpreted at the Pin Point Heritage Museum.
