History
The Savannah College of Art and Design was incorporated on September 29, 1978, by Richard G. Rowan, Paula Wallace, and May and Paul Poetter to bring professional art and design education to southeast Georgia. Its first academic year began in fall 1979 with seventy-one students in the renovated 1892 Savannah Volunteer Guards Armory, the school's first building, now known as Poetter Hall. Founders Rowan and Wallace served as SCAD's first president and provost, and the college has since grown into an international institution with additional campuses in Atlanta and Lacoste, France.
