The canal prospered through the mid-1800s but declined after the Civil War as railroads took over freight, and it closed in the early 1890s. Today the site preserves a restored section of the canal with its locks and towpath, set within tidal and freshwater habitats rich in birds, reptiles, and native plants. Operated with support from the Savannah-Ogeechee Canal Society and Chatham County, it combines exhibits on canal engineering and labor history with several miles of interpretive nature trails.
