Reinhardt University was chartered in 1883 by the North Georgia Conference of the Methodist Church at the urging of Captain A. M. Reinhardt, who sought a school to serve young people of the north Georgia foothills. Classes began in January 1884 for twelve students under the name Reinhardt Academy, with the Reverend James T. Linn as its first president. The school became a junior college in 1953, added its first bachelor's degree in 1994, and was elevated to Reinhardt University in 2010, on a campus in Waleska.
