It is named for Judge William H. Reynolds, a self-taught lawyer born in 1890 who passed the Georgia bar in 1919 and acquired the land in the late 1920s as his personal retreat, building a series of ponds during the 1930s to take advantage of the site's springs. Reynolds donated about 130 acres of woodland and wetlands to the county in 1976, and additional acreage was added in 1997. Today the preserve offers roughly four miles of footpaths through hardwood forest, wetlands, streams, and ponds, along with an environmental education center on the grounds of the historic Huie farmstead.
