Clayton State University opened in Morrow in 1969 as Clayton Junior College, one of three junior colleges authorized by the Board of Regents to bring higher education within commuting distance of metropolitan Atlanta residents. Founding president Harry S. Downs led the institution from its opening, when it welcomed 942 students, through 1993. The Board of Regents elevated it to baccalaureate status in 1986, and after several name changes it adopted its present name in 2005. Its main campus spans roughly 214 wooded acres dotted with lakes south of Atlanta.
